Terminal 5

Heathrow Airport

We are extremely pleased to have been and still involved in the successful and ongoing delivery of steel reinforcement to Terminal 5 Heathrow, in partnership with BAA and Laing O'Rourke Civil Engineering Ltd.

The new terminal exclusively for the use of British Airways is scheduled to open on time, and on budget in March 2008.

Tender documents were issued to the industry by BAA in 2001 for the supply of 150,000 tonnes of steel reinforcement to the Terminal 5 project.

A collaborative tender approach was taken by forming a joint venture company between Express Reinforcements Ltd and O'Rourke Civil Engineering Ltd to bring together sets of expertise that would challenge traditional reinforcement manufacture delivery and installation, which ultimately would provide the customer with best value, minimising risk and maximising opportunity.

The customer recognised the innovative approach and the joint venture was awarded the supply contract.

With stringent public inquiry constraints levied on bulk materials delivered to the project, the joint venture was responsible for the following scope:

The on site reinforcement facility was commissioned in June 2003 when weekly production peaked at 2,500 tonnes from single shift working. The facility was decommissioned at the end of October 2005, as the reinforcement demand fell and the facility was required for other trades for the fit out works.

Reinforcement continues to be delivered for the project from our main operating plant at Neath.
