Gabions are rectangular boxes which are formed from panels of triple twisted mesh which are framed by thicker selvedge wires. End panels and internal diaphragms at 1.0m centres are then wired to the base of the gabion. The triple twist weaving of the wire prevents unraveling.

Mattresses are also rectangular boxes which are larger in area and thinner in depth than gabions. They are made with a smaller mesh size and a thinner wire to provide a higher degree of flexibility. Like the gabions, the mesh is framed by a thicker selvedge wire but due to the larger size of the mattress the lid is made of a separate panel of mesh to the base. Additional end panels and internal diaphragms at 1.0m centres are then wired to the base of the mattress.

Gabion boxes and mattresses are constructed from wire manufactured to comply with BS1052:1996 and self edged with thicker wire.

Wire is galvanised in accordance with BS 443:1990, with minimum thickness complying with the requirements of table 4 of BS 443.

PVC-U coating (minimum thickness 0.5mm) can be supplied where specified after galvanising and before weaving. Life expectancy of PVC-U coated mesh in dry land retaining walls is considered to be 120 years.

Gabion Boxes

Gabion boxes are designed on the principle of mass earth retaining wall. The strength and flexibility of the triple twisted mesh helps withstand and absorb the forces generated by retained earth or flowing water.

Mattresses

Mattresses are used on level ground but more commonly on slopes for erosion/scour protection. They are laid with their diaphragms facing across the slope or across the direction of water flow so that they hold the mass of stone filling in place at regular intervals.
